ELECTORAL ROLL
The UK Electoral Roll is a database containing 45 million names and addresses who are eligible to vote. If you are a British, Commonwealth, Irish or European Union citizen living in the UK , you are required by law to provide your name and address for inclusion.
It is also commonly known as the Register of Electors, Electoral Register and Voters Roll.
In October 2002, new regulations under the Representation of the People (England & Wales) (Amendment) 2002 Act came into force there are now 2 versions available, Full Electoral Roll and Edited Electoral Roll.
What is the Full Electoral Roll?
The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote.
The UK's 3 Credit reference agencies, Equifax, Experian and Callcredit are allowed to use the full registers, but only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit, and to prevent money laundering. Anyone who has a copy of the full register will be committing a criminal offence if they unlawfully pass on information from it.
It is a criminal offence for organisations to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose.
We do not have access to the full Electoral Registers after October 2002 but the Act does not effect access to or use of historical Electoral Rolls.
What is the Edited Electoral Roll?
The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for their names to be excluded from that version. It can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.
Approximately 26 million people are recorded on the latest edited 2009 Electoral Roll and this version is available at eroll.co.uk.
How many Edited Electoral Roll records do you hold?
We hold the entire edited versions for the past 7 years totalling 212 million records.
When is the Electoral Roll published?
Between August and October each year, an electoral registration form will be delivered to your home. When you receive it, you need to make sure your details are correct and send it back to your electoral registration office as soon as possible. The new Electoral Register is published on 1 December.
The data is normally loaded up on our database in March of the following year.
If you are not included on the register published on the 1st December each year or your details are out of date, your local authority is now able to add, amend or delete your details to a rolling version of their Electoral Register on a monthly basis.
